Summer Catch Up: Part 2
Hello again, here I am with the second part of my Summer Catch Up. You can read the first post here.
This will mostly be photos, actually A LOT of photos! I took quite a few during a weekend up in Yell with family. I'd missed the agricultural show as I was working in the morning and the ferry was booked up anyway so I drove up just after dinner (or lunch if you prefer..). I had a bit of time before the ferry at 3pm so stopped at several points on my drive North.
Of course, I had to include photos of old houses... this one is along the main road at Girlsta.
Halfway Hoose on the left (meaning halfway to north isles ferry from Lerwick)
I stopped in along Tagon Stores at Voe for some crisps to sustain me and took this photo looking back toward Lower Voe. The road you can see is affectionately known as 'Da Alps' as it's long and quite twisty, all single track, fun for pretending you're a rally driver, not so much if you get car sick! It leads West coming out at one of my favourite places, East Burrafirth.
The very pretty Voe kirk.
Toft (pronounced 'Taft' in Shetland) and the ferry which runs across to Ulsta (pronounced 'Oolsta'), Yell. A great place for spotting otters, although none on this day.
The main road through Yell runs along the West side. Some beautiful places along West Yell. Over to the left of this picture you can see a bit of the very strong tides for which Yell Sound is notorious.
Ready for winter - L: Peat stacked and covered; R: silage bales
Side road where I turn off into Westsandwick, this part is Da Sooth Toon, with the North Haa (pronounced 'Nort Haw' in Yell) to the left.
North Haa in the distance. Lots of memories playing in this burn when I was peerie. When the tide's out you can find some nice bits of laem (pottery) among the seaweed.
Love this photo of my niece! She loves being at the 'holiday hoose'. On our way up the road to the beach.
Old and weathered walls, white-wash and windows contrasting with bright, fresh colours make me happy.
Almost at the beach. This is the North Toon, looking to Nusterhoose and Leady. The white house is one of the houses known as Leady and was like a second home to me, my brothers, sisters, Mam and Auntie as we spent so much of our holiday time here. Seeing it gives me an odd mixture of nostalgia, happiness and peace along with quite a deep loss and sadness. It was left to other members of the family and as we've all grown up, many of us with families of our own now, they spend a lot more time there and it was only right that we found our own bit of land and worked at building our own place there. Really miss the rayburn and the smell of the house though... oh dear, didn't expect to write so much about this at the moment, it always makes me a bit emotional. I'll do a post dedicated to Leady at some point.
Moving on! Westsandwick beach!
The past rough seas had ripped lots of big seaweed stalks which were fun to play with!
I think that's probably enough photographs to keep you going for a bit, I'll leave you with something else discovered on the beach... draatsi tracks...
